University German is not only a collection of specialist words. You also need to ask a question, explain a misunderstanding, and write a message that makes your request clear. These small tasks are useful whether you are practising in Jordan or preparing for future study.

Make your introduction useful to the listener

Begin with Ich studiere … and add one sentence about an interest. To ask a classmate about their subject, use Was studierst du? The informal du can suit a conversation between students. With staff or someone you do not know, use the form of address appropriate to the situation and follow their lead.

Ask for clarification rather than guessing

Try Könnten Sie das bitte genauer erklären? for an explanation, or Habe ich richtig verstanden, dass …? to check your understanding. Practise completing the second phrase with your own summary. It is more useful to clarify one point than to nod through instructions you have not understood.

Add a reason in a discussion

Begin an opinion with Meiner Meinung nach … and give a reason. To qualify agreement, try Ich stimme teilweise zu. Then explain where your view differs. Work with a familiar topic first, such as recorded lectures or group projects, so you can focus on expressing the connection between ideas.

Write a short, polite email

Use a specific subject, a suitable greeting such as Sehr geehrte Frau Müller,, your reason for writing, and one clear request. End with Mit freundlichen Grüßen and your name. Language practice does not establish eligibility for a programme: the DAAD notes that accepted language certificates and requirements depend on the institution and degree. Check your chosen programme’s current requirements directly.

Try it yourself

Write an email asking where to find materials for a missed seminar. Keep it to five sentences. Include the seminar name, your request, and a polite closing; avoid inventing a reason you do not need to explain.
